Two Short Tie Straps is a mixed media assemblage from 2017 that reflects my earlier focus on industrial materials, surface buildup, and restrained composition. The piece is constructed on plywood with layers of joint compound and paint, creating a textured ground that shows evidence of abrasion, wear, and age. Pencil marks and subtle tonal shifts remain visible beneath the surface, reinforcing a sense of process rather than finish.
The two steel tie straps are construction hardware typically used to join lumber. For this work, they were chemically stripped and rusted to remove their zinc coating and expose raw steel, allowing natural corrosion to develop. Nails, roofing tar, and polyurethane further embed the metal into the surface, giving the piece physical depth and weight.
Recently reframed in a deep shadow box, the added volume emphasizes its object-like presence and reinforces the tension between painting and constructed artifact.
