Five Valves with Three Springs is a mixed media assemblage created in 2018 as part of my Ode to the Object series. The work is built on plywood and layered with plaster, paint, and roofing tar, creating a worn, industrial surface that carries evidence of buildup, erosion, and repair.
The primary elements are small engine valves and springs, materials designed for function and repetition rather than display. Set into a shallow wooden shelf, the components are removed from their mechanical context and presented as individual forms. Their spacing and alignment suggest both order and interruption, inviting a slower reading of objects normally overlooked.
Like the other works in this series, this piece focuses on elevating utilitarian materials through careful composition, surface treatment, and restraint, allowing the objects themselves to remain central to the experience.
